San Francisco’s growing population of LGBT seniors was the topic of legislation introduced today by the city’s Board of Supervisors.
The legislation, introduced by Supervisors Scott Wiener, David Campos and Christina Olague, would create an 11-member task force to formulate policies to best serve LGBT seniors, a group expected to double in size in San Francisco by 2030.
Wiener said, “There are challenges very specific to the LGBT senior population,” including the fact that many do not have adult children to help support them and might face discrimination at senior housing facilities.
He said the legislation was drafted following a “well-attended” community meeting on the issue in January.
If approved, the board would appoint members to the task force, which would consist of community members and experts in the field.
The task force would then have 15 months to gather information and make policy recommendations about the various problems affecting the community.
“If we don’t plan for this, there will be a lot of people with a lot of challenges that aren’t being met,” Wiener said. “This is an important issue, and this will help us focus on it.”
