Stacey Krause, a 20-year-old San Francisco State University student, was fatally struck while walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of Alemany Boulevard and San Juan Avenue on the night of Oct. 9, 2008.

The death prompted Active Leadership to Advance the Youth, a community group representing youth in the area, to call for safety improvements in the area, including a stoplight at the intersection where Krause was struck, according to Avalos’ office.

Avalos will join San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director Ed Reiskin and members of the community at 12:30 p.m. Friday to commemorate Krause’s life and dedicate the turning on of the new stoplight in her memory.

“Losing one life is one too many when it comes to pedestrian and traffic safety,” Avalos said in a statement. “I am thankful for the community leadership from our youth to ensure that the tragic incident of Stacey’s death was not in vain.”
