San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is reaching out to residents using town halls, “Coffee with Mayor Lee” events, and social media to help establish priorities and educate voters as he balances the city’s two-year budget, the mayor’s office announced today.
“We must build a balanced budget that not only ensures that San Franciscans get the city services they need, but one that will set the city on a steady course to fiscal solvency,” the mayor said in a written statement.
“My goal is to stimulate the local economy, create good jobs, and encourage innovative efficiencies within city departments and programs, and I am eager to share these principles with the public and hear directly from them,” Lee said.
Seven “Coffee with the Mayor” events were scheduled beginning on March 10 and continuing each month through October.
Participants for the events will be selected at random from residents who call 311 and leave their name, contact information, and brief details about the issue they would like to discuss with the mayor.
In addition, Lee has scheduled six town hall meetings with district supervisors to discuss the city’s budget priorities. The first will be held on March 29 at 6 p.m. in the Tenderloin Community School at 627 Turk St. with Supervisors Christina Olague and Jane Kim.
Lee will also be inviting residents to leave suggestions online, using social networks like Twitter and Facebook and by holding a lunchtime digital town hall on Google+ inspired by a similar event recently held by President Obama.
