This winter’s string of Spare the Air Days will continue Monday, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced today.

Due to unhealthy air quality conditions, Monday will be the 12th Spare the Air Day declared this winter, and the second of New Year.

It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels on Spare the Air days either indoors or out. The ban is intended to help limit winter air pollution caused by particulates and soot from wood smoke, which are linked to illnesses including asthma, bronchitis and lung disease.

The ban affects Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and central and southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano counties.
