An inbound N-line light-rail vehicle derailed at Folsom Street and Embarcadero shortly before 7 p.m., spokesman Paul Rose said.
Shuttle buses were in place to take riders to their destinations, he said.
Service was disrupted as of 7:15 p.m., although Rose said light-rail service was expected to resume shortly.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
