A man who was fatally shot by police as he exchanged gunfire with officers in San Francisco’s Lower Nob Hill neighborhood on Wednesday has been identified by the medical examiner’s officer as 33-year-old Steven Young.
Young, a San Carlos resident, was shot in a confrontation with police near Larkin and Fern streets that stemmed from a traffic stop, police said.
Officers pulled over the car Young was driving at about 1:25 p.m. Wednesday. Young got out of the car and fled, and as two officers chased him, he fired at least two shots at them, according to police.
The officers were not hit, and returned fire, hitting Young in the upper body. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries late Thursday, police said.
While the officers were chasing Young, a female passenger in the car he had abandoned slid over into the driver’s seat and drove away. Investigators have since located and interviewed her, and she is no longer considered a person of interest in the case, according to police.
Police Chief Greg Suhr is hosting a community meeting this afternoon about the shooting. The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Northern Police Station, at 1125 Fillmore St.
