sfpd_cityhall.jpgIn an interesting turn of events, the story of a man who left a store without paying for a beer is ending in a $71,000 settlement.

As the Ex reports, Kevin Woodson ended up with a fractured wrist and knee after a clerk failed to give him 20 cents of credit for a beer. Woodson had previously had an “informal credit system” at the store, according to his lawyer.

After Woodson left with the beer, SFPD Officer Adam Eatia reportedly tracked him down, and according to at least two witnesses, beat Woodson in the knee and wrist with a billy club. According to Woodson, treatment for those injuries cost him $26,000.

The city has proffered a tentative settlement of $71,000, which is pending approval from the Board of Supervisors.
