policeblotter_sfa.jpg5:01 PM: Police and a bomb squad responded to a downtown San Francisco street this afternoon to investigate a suspicious package, a police sergeant said.

Officers closed off the 200 block of Broadway, which is between Sansome and Battery streets, and police were able to determine that the duffel bag posed no safety hazard, Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

A fire dispatcher said that a battalion chief, engine crew and medic were dispatched to 250 Broadway at 3:55 p.m.

The street was reopened at about 4:30 p.m., although Andraychak said officers may have remained on the scene to complete their investigation.

4:33 PM: Public safety personnel responded to a downtown San Francisco street this afternoon to investigate a suspicious package, a fire dispatcher said.

A battalion chief, engine crew and medic were dispatched to 250 Broadway after receiving a report of a suspicious package at 3:55 p.m., the dispatcher said.

Police said they responded to the area to investigate a report of a suspicious backpack.

A city alert system advised residents to avoid the area of Sansome Street between Pacific Avenue and Vallejo Street.
