SF Sheriff’s Still Up In The Air, Mirkarimi Narrowly In Lead

11:30 PM: Though this year’s election results are hardly final, they are decisive enough that the Ex feels safe to declare “George Gascón headed for SF district attorney win” and that “Ed Lee Takes Commanding Lead In Mayor’s Race,” and the Associated Press to say that “Early results show Lee ahead in SF mayor’s race.”

The Chron appears to agree, saying “Voters supporting George Gascón, sheriff too close to call” (headline since changed to “Gascón leads D.A. race; Mirkarimi tops for sheriff”) and “Ed Lee takes large early lead in mayor’s race.”

In terms of Sheriff, things are less clearcut, with the Ex saying “Close jockeying for position in San Francisco sheriff race.” “Jockeying!” Exciting.

10:15 PM: with 429 of 429 precincts reporting, Ed Lee’s still on top for mayor, George Gascon’s leading for DA, and Ross Mirkarimi’s leading for sheriff. However, since a candidate needs to have a majority vote (50% +1), now the ranked-choice calculations begin.

9:45 PM: Now we have the first round of unofficial election results that includes votes cast at the polling places (the last report was just vote-by-mail), and with 253 out of 429 precincts (58.97%) reporting, George Gascon is still in the lead in the DA’s race, Ross Mirkarimi’s lead in the sheriff’s race seems to be solidifying, and Ed Lee’s still winning the mayor’s race, with a bit more that 33% of the vote. But, as the Ex’s Melissa Griffin notes, there’s still another 29,000 votes to be counted.

8:45 PM: The first round of early election results are in, right now, the absentees. Few surprises yet, with Ed Lee in a sizable lead for mayor, George Gascon leading in the DA’s race, and Ross Mirkarimi ahead by a hair in the Sheriff’s race.
