police-light-bar1.jpgPolice are searching for a bank robber who this afternoon held up a bank blocks from City Hall and made off with thousands of dollars in cash, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded at about 1:30 p.m. to a report of a robbery at the Redwood Credit Union at 1390 Market St., which is on the street level of the Fox Plaza mid-rise office and residential building at the corner of 10th Street.

Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said the scruffy-looking white man walked into the bank and verbally demanded the money from a teller, who did not see a weapon.

The teller complied, handing over several thousand dollars worth of U.S. currency, Esparza said.

The suspect, who was wearing loose jeans and a maroon shirt, walked out of the bank and fled the scene on foot. He was last seen possibly traveling west on Market Street, Esparza said.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from both the bank and the building to refine the suspect description and possibly extract a still image of the man, who is about 6 feet tall and weighs 180 pounds.
