A bicyclist was critically injured when he was struck by a taxicab that ran a red light in San Francisco’s Mission District early Sunday, a police spokesman said.

The accident was reported at 1:59 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Guerrero streets.

The 22-year-old man traveling south on Guerrero Street was in the crosswalk when he was hit by the cab, which was traveling east and ran a red light, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with head trauma and injuries that are considered life-threatening, Manfredi said.

The taxi driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. The 56-year-old man, whose name was not being released as of this afternoon, was cited for running the red light but has not been arrested pending further investigation, Manfredi said.

The driver was not injured, and did not have anyone else in the cab at the time of the crash, he said.

The vehicle was towed and is being held for the investigation into the crash, according to Manfredi.

The taxi driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. The driver, a 56-year-old man whose name was not immediately available, was not arrested, according to police.
The collision remains under investigation.
