sfpd_arrestcuffs.jpgA 31-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting another man in San Francisco’s Mission District on Labor Day, a police spokesman said today.

Joseph Johnson, a San Francisco resident, was arrested on Friday in connection with the killing of Dwayne Spruell, 45, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

Spruell, also a San Francisco resident, was shot at about 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 5 in the first block of Camp Street, near Guerrero Street, police said.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired found him lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and another to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homicide was the third in the Mission District in less than a week, and the violence prompted the Police Department to step up patrols in the area.

Johnson was set to be arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court this afternoon but the hearing was continued to Thursday, district attorney’s spokesman Seth Steward said.
