bakerbeach.jpgFrom Appeal Reader J.J.:

Last night at around 8 PM I was listening to the the EMS/SFFD scanner, and there was a report of a body found at Baker Beach. Can you find out what happened?

According to SFFD spokesperson Lt. Mindy Talmadge, SFFD responded to a call of a body that washed up at Baker Beach Tuesday night.

She says that “there was a report earlier in the day of someone jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge,” and that officials believe that it’s possible that the remains found were that person.

A call to the SF Medical Examiner’s office for more details on the deceased has not been returned at publication time. We’ll update when it is. Update 3:16: According to Richard Vetterli with the ME’s office, the body, which he says is female, has yet to be identified. “Hopefully we’ll have an ID by this afternoon.”

It’s worth nothing at this time that San Francisco Suicide Prevention offers a number of hotlines, including a 24-hour crisis line at (415) 781-0500. People who are considering taking their own life are urged to call them, or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

I was walking the beach with my son around sunset, when we came across a lot of SFFD and Presidio FD at the farthest end of the parking lot. Fearing the worst, I walked on the trail by the fence of the battery. At the end of nude beach, around that first outcropping of rock, there was a rescue boat and jet-ski bringing something to shore and place in a little 4×4 Tractor. When it cruised past us, I saw limp lifeless legs hanging over the side of the bed. Sad. Nothing in the news today either last night or today.

I don’t give much credence to sfappeal, but I would have given some credit to Ms. Batey for attempting restraint in her “reporting” prior to today.

However, this article is truly tasteless and exploitive, and I’m disappointed by this sensationalized gossip column.

There are reasons why suicides are not public “news”, whether bodies are recovered or not. Suicides are not criminal cases, they are not reported on, they are not public record, they are not sensationalized – at least not in law enforcement and in tactful media.

Does anyone have more information about this? Have they identified the person found?

Yes, I was at the beach when the Coast Guard arrived and when they brought the victim ashore. Very sad indeed. As previous commenters mentioned, the word was that he was a suicide victim.

My thoughts have been with him, and I do hope that now he is in a more peaceful place.

I believe the woman found was my friend’s sister. The family was notified and is grieving. We are all devastated and our heart is broken. Thank you for your concern. It is very sad….

I disagree with your comments about privacy. Many people are involved when someone goes missing, and I thank the interwebs for putting the word out and helping to find closure to these lost people cases. Some of us know those that are missing, or they are friends of friends, and we all want to know when they are found, safe or not. I had a feeling this was Maurice James … but he could still turn up.

Also, I think few know how many suicides actually happen off the GGB each month. Keeping these incidents secret doesn’t do anybody any good.

How would you know whom you are praying for if you hadn’t read this article?

The reason I asked about more information is because I fear I may have known this person. I’m still not sure.

Yes I definitely will be there tonight with her family and her friends that are in town. You can tell your friend he is welcome to come tonight, the family is welcoming all of her friends to be there.

…her friends that are nearby I meant to say, I know she also has friends in other states. I think her family might have another memorial for her when they return to their home town.

I believe Ochre is right about suicides normally being withheld from news. Besides the reasons Ochre already mentioned, there is the risk that publishing the info might be enough to push some other desperate people to kill themselves, whether just emboldened by knowing someone else did it or seeking a final, grande, media audience for their pain. My understanding, though, is that any tips or info newspapers get would be shared with the family and local police leading searches.

Condolences to all here who believe they know the victim. Hard to imagine a sadder loss.

I was with a friend walking down the trail to the nude beach, and we stumbled upon the scene. There were a few people in wetsuits standing around a body. It took about 20 minutes for them to bring a jet ski to load the person on. I snapped a photo of the coast guard operation taking place, with the boats and helicopters and all. (took care to make sure the body is not visible in the pic). I suspected a hiking or jogging accident.

The person I’m talking about appeared to be a young white male, wearing nothing but black jogging shorts, running shoes, and an iPod. It was around 7pm Aug. 1st. When we came down the trail the body was about 30′ from us. The coast guard operation was swift and well executed.
