sfmarathon.jpgSan Francisco’s annual marathon has gone hi-tech, adding a free mobile app intended to serve both runners and spectators .

As the Chron reports, the app (here’s the iPad/iPhone version, here’s the Android one) from Map My Fitness uses your phone’s GPS to plot progress and directions.

According to the app’s creators, runners can use the app to check their own times and splits, and to get maps of the expo, route, food, water, entertainment, transportation. Spectators can use it to track your friends and family live on a map as well as see their unofficial times and splits.

The race, which starts at 5:30 AM (with staggered starts until 6:30 AM) this Sunday, runs from The Embarcadero and Mission north along The Embarcadero, through the Presidio, the outer Richmond, Golden Gate Park, Haight, the Mission, Inner Bayview, and back to the Embarcadero.

Of course, it’s not all fun and games! You can see a list of the streets and Muni lines that will be closed or disrupted here.
