greatH_lede.jpgSouthbound lanes of Great Highway in San Francisco will be closed for a week starting Monday for sand removal, according to the Department of Public Works.

Every year the department’s Promenade Maintenance Project removes and relocates sand that piles in front of and on the walking path between Great Highway and Ocean Beach using heavy machinery, DPW spokesman Alex Murillo said in a statement. Crews will remove an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 cubic yards of sand during the next week.

Great Highway will be closed to southbound traffic during scheduled work hours from today at 8 a.m. through Friday by 3 p.m. between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard.

Motorists are encouraged to use Sunset Boulevard, and beach visitors should avoid the areas where the work is occurring. Pedestrians can still access Ocean Beach north of Noriega Street and south of Santiago Street.
