As previously reported, the SFPD was planning a press conference at the pilot skate park on Stanyan and Waller St Tuesday. The purpose of the event? To team up with SF’s Rec and Park department to announce the start of the city’s “Safe Summer in the Parks” initiative to add law enforcement to parks in order to, they hope, increase public safety.
The plan to, as the Ex put it, “enhance the visitors’ sense of safety” includes more appearances of mounted and motorcycle units and more frequent patrols. Representatives from the Department of Animal Care and Control and the Department of Public Health have also been enlisted to aid in the fight to encourage you to use SF parks without fear.
Says SFPD Chief Greg Suhr in a statement, “We are excited that with this partnership, our City will be putting parks safety as a top priority this summer so San Franciscans can enjoy the outdoors safely.”
Fears quelled by this initiative, are you now convinced that you don’t have to don battle armor to hit an SF Rec spot? For a complete list of park activities, visit SF’s Rec and Park website at sfrecpark.org.
