Firefighters’ Funerals Expected to Cause Major Traffic Delays [BC]

FirefighterDies06.02.11lede.jpgAs previously reported, the funeral service for two SF firefighters who died battling a Diamond Heights blaze last Thursday, is today. Given the amount of firefighters, citizens, family and friends who will be attending the service, some roads will be closed and Muni routes stopped for the 12:30pm service at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

From about 9am to 5:30pm, Geary St. will be closed, west-bound from Gough to Webster and east-bound from Divisadero to Gough. Webster St’s north-bound lanes will be closed from Ellis to Geary, while Gough St. will only have partial lane closures from Geary to Ellis.

After the funeral, there will be a procession traveling to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, also impacting certain roads. Their route is as follows:

South on Gough, turning west on Market St. and then turning south on Valencia. From Valencia St., the procession will continue, turning west on 15th Street, then turning south on Dolores and merging onto San Jose Avenue. From San Jose Avenue, the procession will enter the 280 Freeway south bound to Serramonte Blvd. From Serramonte Blvd, the procession will turn onto Collins Rd, then on El Camino Real ending at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Certain Muni routes will also be impacted by the funeral service and procession. They are the F-Market, J- Church, 5- Fulton, 6- Parnassus, 21- Hayes, 22- Fillmore, 24-Divisadero, 31- Balboa, 33- Stanyan, 48- Quintara, 38/38L- Geary and 71/71L- Haight-Noriega.

Can’t make the funeral but still want to see it? ABC7 will be streaming it at their website.

Any idea how long the service is supposed to be?

Hey, Patrick. It’s hard to say — we got a look at the “program” for the services, it’s a full mass with communion and everything, so (based on my limited funeral experience) I think it could be at least a couple hours. Sorry we can’t be more specific, but I think no one really knows.

Well, there is BART? And that little train that takes you to BART is fun! It feels like Las Vegas.

Just heard on KCBS – funeral is expected to be 3 hours long. The 280 is closed starting at 3pm. Everyone should leave work right NOW if they want to go home ever today.
