baby_crying.jpgAdd a few more people to the list of those opposed to SF’s proposed anti-circumcision measure. As the Ex reports, US Rep. Brad Sherman of Sherman Oaks (no relation, I’m sure) is hard at work on defending San Francisco and the nation against intactivists.

Sherman’s Religious and Parental Rights Defense Act of 2011 aims to prevent SF as well as any other US town from enacting such a ban. CA Assemblyman and person who apparently isn’t content to rely on Brad Sherman, Mike Gatto of LA is reportedly introducing a similar plan for CA state legislature.

In a statement, Sherman said “To infringe the religious rights of so many Americans, San Francisco should have some compelling medical reason; however, the medical literature actually shows clear benefits of male circumcision.”

The intactivist movement has come under increased fire as late, after releasing a “Foreskin Man” comic book promoting the anti-snip cause containing characters like “a sneering rabbi named Monster Mohel.” Intactivist Matthew Hess, who drew the comic book, said, however, “I’m not attacking Jews; I’m attacking one thing they do.”

Lloyd Schofield, the intactivist responsible for garnering the signatures necessary to put the proposal on SF’s November ballot also bristles at claims that the issue is a religious freedom one, and says that that the effort does not “target any person, group or religion,” and is instead a human rights concern.
