Participating schools and organizers have been preparing for the day by conducting assemblies and classroom programs to teach the students about the ocean and local watersheds, organizers from Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary said.

The 550 students–from San Francisco’s Sunset Elementary and Ulloa Elementary and Marin County’s Bahia Vista Elementary, Edna Maguire Elementary, and Willow Creek Academy–will start cleaning up the beach at 10 a.m.

The clean-up will be followed by students arranging themselves on the beach to create an aerial art image of a bat ray and spell out the message “turn the tide,” organizers said.
