A woman walking her dog along the north end of Ocean Beach came upon an unconscious, male surfer at about 11:45 AM Wednesday, Richmond SF blog reports. According to Twitter user @ob_kc SFFD, park police, lifeguards, and surf medics attempted to revive the man, who was found near Stairwell No. 7.

Though he was taken to the UCSF hospital, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office told the Ocean Beach Bulletin the man had died, but did not provide any additional details.

The surfer’s identity has yet to be released, pending notification of his family.

Update: Dan McMenamin of Bay City News reports that Jonathan Luhn, 44, of San Jose, was identified today as the man who was spotted floating in the water at about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

A good Samaritan brought him into shore, called 911 and started doing CPR, San Francisco fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

Luhn was taken to the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is scheduled for today, but the official cause of death might take weeks to determine, according to the medical examiner’s office.
