The San Francisco Police Department is joining other local law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in taking part in a nationwide prescription drug take-back day on Saturday.
The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and will be held at all 10 district police stations in San Francisco, according to police.
There will be collection containers for prescription pills that are expired, unused or unwanted. The service is anonymous and no questions will be asked, police said.
Liquid medications, intravenous solutions, needles, inhalers, and patch-style medications will not be accepted, nor will illegal substances such as methamphetamine or cocaine.
The national take-back day is designed to cut down on the widespread abuse of prescription drugs. Getting rid of the pills by throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet can also lead to environmental hazards.
For drug take-back locations outside of San Francisco, people can visit www.dea.gov, click on the “Got Drugs?” banner at the top of the home page, which connects to a database in which people can search by zip code, city or county.
