transgender pride flag.pngIn light of the recent beating of a transgender woman on April 1, a rally is being held to combat hate crimes this evening, from 6pm to 8pm. The rally will take place at the 16th and Mission BART station, where the crime occurred.

As KTVU reports, the 20-year-old victim was attacked around 10pm. She was handing out condoms as part of her outreach work for prostitutes and Latino immigrants when two men approached her. They both verbally harassed her, with one of the suspects grabbing her smartphone, then beating her.

Two suspects in the incident were arrested, and face robbery, conspiracy, aggravated assault, and hate crime allegations. The Bay Area Reporter says that both suspects were either on parole or on probation at the time the incident occurred.

A preliminary hearing has been set for next Tuesday, April 19.
