police-light-bar1.jpg7:45 PM: Crews are still searching for a man who went missing after a sailboat capsized in the water near San Francisco’s Ocean Beach this afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard helicopter responded to the beach at about 2:30 p.m. on reports of a person in the water off the Great Highway, between Moraga and Noriega streets.

Witnesses saw an inflatable boat carrying two men get flipped by a wave, and the two men went missing, fire Battalion Chief Lorrie Kalos said.

Rescuers were able to pull a 52-year-old man from the water at about 4 p.m., according to fire officials and the Coast Guard.

Kalos said the man was hypothermic, but officials were eventually able to confirm that he and another man had fled their capsized sailboat in the raft, according to Coast Guard Lt. Andrew Kennedy.

Crews were still searching for the second man, who is believed to be wearing a life vest, as of 7:30 p.m., Kennedy said.

“The weather is slightly deceiving with these blue skies,” he said.

“The conditions on the water are harsh,” he said. “It’s blowing pretty hard out there.”

Gusts are raging at about 35 to 45 mph, Kennedy said, and added that anyone who takes to waters in today’s weather should exercise extreme caution.

Anyone with information about the missing person is encouraged to contact the Coast Guard at (415) 399-3530.
