A man was arrested late Wednesday night for allegedly beating two other men with a baseball bat in a road rage incident the day before in San Francisco’s Stonestown Galleria mall, police said.
The attack occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Winston Drive, police said.
Officers from the Police Department and San Francisco State University arrived to find a man with head injuries and another man with arm injuries.
The victims told police that they were in a car that had stopped for pedestrians to cross the street when a man pulled alongside them and started swearing at them.
The suspect then got out of his car and hit the victims’ vehicle with a baseball bat. The driver of the victims’ vehicle got out of his car to confront the suspect, who then struck him several times with the bat, police said.
The other victim tried to stop the fight and was also struck by the bat.
The driver lost consciousness, but both men’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, police Capt. Curtis Lum said.
The suspect then drove away and was not found that night.
But the next night, a San Francisco State University sergeant spotted a vehicle committing several traffic infractions in the 700 block of Font Boulevard, police said.
The sergeant realized the license plate and vehicle description matched that of the vehicle involved in the road rage attack, and after the car pulled into a driveway, the driver was taken into custody without incident.
Police contacted one of the victims of Tuesday’s attack and drove him to the location of the car stop, where he identified the man as his attacker, police said.
The driver, a 20-year-old man whose name was not immediately available, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, Lum said.
