Several victims of a shooting that injured five people in San Francisco’s Mission District on Monday night were at a bar on 16th Street playing pool just before they were shot, the bar owner said today.
The shooting was reported at about 11:05 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 16th Street and Rondel Place, between Mission and Valencia streets.
Officers responded and found five men suffering from gunshot wounds. All five victims, who ranged in age from 26 to 42, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital where four were in stable condition this morning, police said.
The fifth victim, a 36-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
Some of the victims had just left El Tin Tan, a bar at 3065 16th St., after playing billiards there, said Cristina Gomez, the bar’s owner.
Gomez’s son, who did not want to give his name, said the bar’s surveillance footage showed three men leaving the bar. Seconds later, one or two ran back inside after being shot, he said.
He said the street outside was littered with dozens of bullet casings afterward.
Gomez said the men were not gang members and were regulars at the bar.
The door of the bar had seven bullet holes in it this morning. Another bullet shattered a window and struck a counter next door at Pancho Villa Taqueria, where employees were repairing the damage this morning.
Gomez said there have been a number of shootings near her bar, although this was the first that had affected the business.
“You have no control over what’s going on in the streets,” she said. “We just try to keep the front of our place safe.”
A late-model red Pontiac Trans Am and a Chevy Caprice station wagon are being sought in connection with the shooting, which police believe was carried out by two Hispanic men in their early 20s.
No arrests have been made in the case.
