A car struck and killed a coyote near San Francisco’s Presidio this morning, and traffic was significantly stalled near the crash, a police spokeswoman said.
Police responded to reports of a coyote body on Park Presidio Boulevard near Lake Street just before 7 a.m., San Francisco police Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.
A responding officer found the body on the northbound side of the street in the fast lane, Tomioka said.
“The coyote was very dead and creating a hazard,” she said. “Cars in the adjacent lanes were trying to avoid it.”
The officer removed the coyote and intended to take it to San Francisco Animal Care and Control.
A witness reported another coyote sighting in the same neighborhood this morning. It was alive and it may have spooked the witness’s dog.
Coyote sightings are fairly common in or near the Presidio, but residents have also seen them near Golden Gate Park, Tomioka said.
“They’re not usually dangerous, but they will protect themselves,” she said. “The coyotes won’t come running after a human, but they will attack dogs or raccoons.”
