San Francisco’s legislation prohibiting toys from fast-food meals that don’t meet certain nutritional standards may get a light-hearted skewering soon on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”
The legislation, introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar, has already been mentioned before on the show and has received local and national media attention as a “ban” on the McDonald’s Happy Meal.
According to Mar’s legislative aide LinShao Chin, Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi interviewed Mar in his office for about an hour Thursday afternoon for a segment that could be aired later this month.
An exact date has not yet been confirmed, Chin said.
Mar was not available early this afternoon for comment, and Chin said she was not present for the taping and has not yet been able to ask Mar how it went.
The law, which was approved by the Board of Supervisors 8-3 last month and overcame a veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom, will require that meals with toys and other items marketed to children, such as the Happy Meal, contain fruits and vegetables, not exceed 600 calories, and not include drinks with excessive fat or sugar.
Mar has said the effort was meant to promote children’s health and counter obesity, and hold fast-food outlets that promote to kids accountable.
McDonald’s opposed the legislation, arguing parents should be allowed to make their own choices for their children.
The law will go into effect Dec. 1, 2011.
