police-light-bar1.jpgEveryone knows eggnog’s better with brandy, family parties are more tolerable with whiskey, and drinking and driving don’t mix, right? Just in case your mind’s a mess from the hubbub of the holidays, Bay Area police are cracking down on DUIs just for you.

Starting today and culminating in a five officer motorcycle DUI patrol on Sunday, local patrol squads will be on road duty making sure the streets and highways are safe from drunk drivers.

The consequences for receiving a DUI make for an unpleasant holiday surprise: says Capt. Al Casciato of SFPD’s Traffic Company, “(y)our conviction will show up on your record for 10 years. If you apply for a job at a company that conducts criminal background checks, you run the risk of the company holding your DUI against you and hiring someone with a clean record.”

What if you realize you’ve overdone it? You have no excuse to drive home today or tomorrow, as AAA will be offering its Tipsy Tow service from 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 through 6 a.m. Dec. 25.

All you need to do is call (800) AAA-HELP (program it into your phone now!) for a free tow of up to 10 miles.

“Just tell the AAA operator, ‘I need a Tipsy Tow,’ and a truck will be on its way,” AAA Northern California spokeswoman Cynthia Harris says. “Service is restricted to a one-way ride for the driver and his or her vehicle to the driver’s home.”
