The transit agency announced Thursday that beginning Jan. 1, 2011, Caltrain will introduce its “Baby Bullet” service on weekends, four trains that will make seven stops between San Jose and San Francisco.

Regular weekend trains currently make more than 20 stops on north and southbound routes.

Caltrain officials said the new service, which will initially run as a pilot project for three months, is a response to public requests for faster weekend trips from the Peninsula to San Francisco.

Caltrain is also trying new ways to boost ridership and revenue in the face of a projected $2.3 million budget gap for its 2011 fiscal year.

The new Baby Bullet train will make two roundtrips between San Francisco and San Jose, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, according to Caltrain.
