plane.pngDec 21, 2010: Inclement weather in the Bay Area and other parts of the country is causing flight delays at local airports this morning.

San Francisco International Airport has a ground delay program in effect for arriving flights. Many arrivals were behind schedule by more than an hour early this morning, but delays had dropped to an average of 40 minutes by 11 a.m., airport duty manager Charles Navigante said.

Stormy weather elsewhere in the country, such as in Chicago and Newark, N.J., is also affecting departure times from San Francisco, Navigante said.

Whether delays will continue into the afternoon “is all going to depend on the weather,” he said.

Oakland International Airport is seeing delays of about 30 minutes for departing flights, spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.

The delays are “due to late arriving flights” caused by bad weather around the nation, Barnes said.

Local weather has not caused any delays at Mineta San Jose International Airport, airport spokesman David Vossbrink said.

However, Vossbrink said passengers should check with their airlines to ensure that they have the latest information about schedule changes.

9:49 AM: Inclement weather in the Bay Area and other parts of the country is causing flight delays at San Francisco International Airport this morning, an airport duty manager said.

A ground delay program is in effect for arriving flights, with an average delay of 78 minutes expected until at least noon, duty manager Charles Navigante said.

Stormy weather elsewhere in the country, particularly in Midwest cities like Chicago, is also affecting departure times from San Francisco, Navigante said.

Chicago’s arrivals are an average of 90 minutes behind schedule, he said.

As the day progresses, the local delays could become lengthier if weather-related issues persist, he said.
