handcuffs.jpgPolice arrested a man suspected of fatally beating a 3-month-old puppy and leaving it for dead in a San Leandro parking lot Wednesday, police said.

Officers responded to the Citibank located at 1300 E. 14th Street after receiving a call at 12:58 p.m. of two men beating a dog on the head with a bottle in the parking lot, police said.

The puppy, which was a white and black border collie mix, sustained multiple head wounds and died from its injuries.

A child witnessed the scene unfold and told his father, who then called police.

Police were searching for the two suspects, who were described only as white men traveling in a brown or black pickup truck, when the department received call at about 5 p.m. from a woman inquiring about her missing dog.

The woman told police that her husband had told her the dog was hit by a car and that he left it in the Citibank parking lot.

Officers arrested the unidentified man at his home on suspicion of animal cruelty.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. R. Hudson at (510) 577-3226, or to report tips anonymously at (510) 577-3278.
