A 14-year-old boy is facing vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with a crash early this morning in San Francisco’s Ingleside Terrace neighborhood that killed two people and sent one other person to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
The crash took place around 12:45 a.m. today on Ocean Avenue near Junipero Serra Boulevard, when a sedan driven by a 14-year-old and carrying four other teenagers went off the roadway, San Francisco police Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.
A man was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene, Tomioka said. A second man was also thrown from the car and died from his injuries shortly after being taken to San Francisco General Hospital, she said.
One of the people killed in the collision has been identified by the San Francisco medical examiner’s office as Jonathon Johnson, an 18-year-old from Castro Valley.
The identity of the second person who died is not being released until his family is notified.
A 16-year-old boy who was also in the car was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Tomioka said. His condition was unknown as of 1:30 p.m. today, but Tomioka said he remains hospitalized.
The vehicle was traveling west on Ocean Avenue before the crash, Tomioka said.
Besides the 14-year-old boy who was behind the wheel, the sedan was carrying three 18-year-old men and one 16-year-old boy when the crash occurred, Tomioka said. All of the teens are from the East Bay, she said.
The 14-year-old, whose name has not been released, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and being an unlicensed driver, Tomioka said.
Police also arrested an 18-year-old who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the sedan at the time of the crash and whose father is listed as the registered owner of the car, she said.
Police believe that young man allowed the 14-year-old to drive his father’s car. He was arrested on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Tomioka said.
Additional charges may be added to the teens’ cases by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, Tomioka said.
Police are still working to determine if alcohol or drugs had a role in the crash, Tomioka said. She also didn’t have any information on how many of the five teens involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts, she said.
