No one was injured in the Bayview District incident, which took place near the intersection of Third Street and La Salle Avenue at about 8:20 p.m.
Police spokesman Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said officers had stopped a “suspicious” white 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse speeding through the area.
They were attempting to detain the driver when “a physical altercation of some kind occurred” and the driver sped off, he said.
Police then fired multiple shots, but did not hit the suspect, Dangerfield said.
Other officers in the area pulled the driver over a few blocks away, on Jerrold Avenue near Interstate Highway 280, and he was arrested, Dangerfield said.
The booking charges were not immediately available.
The area is known for gang activity, according to Dangerfield, but it was not yet known whether this incident was gang-related.
The incident is the second officer-involved shooting in San Francisco this week.
On Sunday, a female officer responding to a noise complaint at a Nob Hill hotel was confronted by a man with a gun and fatally shot the man, police said.
Both shootings are undergoing review by the Police Department’s homicide and internal affairs units, the district attorney’s office and the Office of Citizens Complaints.
