detox-vegetables.jpgOctober is Vegetarian Awareness Month, and I know what you might be thinking: do you seriously expect me to survive on pb&j or pasta for the next 30 days?

Oh, no, my dear friends, the delectable world of veggie cuisine is far more delicious then what your college roommate subsisted on. And while San Francisco might be a carnivore’s wet dream, there are still plenty of restaurants that offer superb dishes sans meat.

When I go out for vegetarian meals, I enjoy peach & molasses glazed tempeh, delicate seasonal bastilla with saffron sauce, or a chilled soba noodle salad with bok choy & daikon kimchi.

Whether you’re considering going veg for the month, trying out a meatless Monday, or just dining out with a vegan or vegetarian, here are some of our favorite spots for veggie cuisine to get you started.

If you’re a longtime SF vegan/vegetarian, you probably have other picks you’d love to share (or places you want to steer folks away from) — please don’t hesitate to do so in the comments!

Udupi Palace
There’s usually a line here for a reason. This authentic South Indian restaurant serves up huge dosas, a cousin to the crepe but stuffed with spicy fresh fillings.

Millenium
Millennium is the jewel of the San Francisco vegan restaurant scene. An upscale dining experience that offers succulent choices that sway even die-hard meat lovers.

Saha
There’s a variety of unique vegetarian and vegan options at this secluded Middle Eastern restaurant, including a delicious 3 course $30 prix fixe dinner and a large serving of ambiance.

Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant
An intimidating long list of all vegan dishes, this inexpensive Chinese restaurant serves up some of the best fragrant crispy “chicken” in the city.

Underdog
Here’s the answer to the sausage fan’s parle: enjoy offerings like vegan smoked chipotle, vegan apple sage, or even vegan polish sausages with a side of tater tots.
