giants_db017.jpgThe stakes are high as the San Francisco Giants prepare for today’s opening game of the National League Championship Series versus the Philadelphia Phillies.

Off the field, Mayor Gavin Newsom has placed another friendly baseball-related wager with the challenging city’s mayor, and this time the loser will publicly don the winning team’s baseball cap.

Newsom placed the bet with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter Friday that states both mayors will wear the baseball cap of the winning mayor’s city at an upcoming event supporting local veterans on or around Veterans Day.

The wager highlights an issue important to both mayors–support for returning military veterans. Both cities provide comprehensive support and services to returning service men and women.

“With this friendly wager, Mayor Nutter and I wanted to have a little fun while we also show support for our veterans,” Newsom said in a statement.

As a result of Newsom’s previous wager with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, the people of Atlanta will soon have a Giants flag waving over their City Hall.

Had the Giants lost the division series against Atlanta, a Braves flag would be flying over San Francisco City Hall.

The Giants flag arrived in Atlanta Wednesday morning and Mayor Reed’s office said it would be raised “shortly.”

Newsom said, “I’m looking forward to an exciting series with Philadelphia, and I know my friend Michael Nutter will look just great in a Giants baseball cap.”
