San Francisco City Hall and several other buildings in the Civic Center area will be evacuated this afternoon as part of a multi-organization drill.

The drill, scheduled for 1 p.m., will include between 4,000 and 6,000 tenants at City Hall and other nearby buildings, including the city’s Department of Health and county Superior Court buildings, University of California’s Hastings College of the Law, and the U.S. Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate Ave.

Fire alarms in those buildings will be activated, and people will be taken out of the buildings to pre-designated locations in Civic Center Plaza. People at UC Hastings College of the Law will evacuate to United Nations Plaza.

The drill will cause the closure of surrounding streets, including Carlton B. Goodlett Place between Polk and McAllister streets, McAllister Street between Polk and Larkin streets, and Golden Gate Avenue between Polk and Larkin streets. The streets will be closed from 12:55 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The San Francisco Municipal Railway 5-Fulton bus line will also be disrupted during the drill.

Local, state and federal agencies are participating in the drill to improve response efforts in the event of a real emergency.
