Thee Oh Sees and Flaming Lips
Oh please someone buy me a ticket to see this show, it’s going to be epic. The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees are guaranteed to please fans with their whacked-out garage/psych/punk jams. Plus you’ve probably heard how elaborate a Flaming Lips show is- which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience. Appearing at the Fox Theater in Oakland.

Ocean Beach Sand Castle Contest
If this weekend is anything like last weekend’s scorcher, you can find me Saturday afternoon at the beach sneaking beers and watching people making huge sand castles. Check out the sand art at Ocean Beach (just below the cliff house) from 10am to 4pm, more info here.

Black Couture Ball
Get that little black dress (or suit) out of the closet. The Black Couture Ball brings glamour back to the Fillmore District as guests dress up in vintage costumes and formal black dress to listen and dance to the tune of old school jazz at seven venues, including Yoshi’s Fillmore, Rasselas Jazz Club, 1300 on Fillmore, Bruno’s Pizzeria Cucina, Sheba Piano Lounge and the Fillmore Center Plaza, Lush Life Gallery and Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles. Buy tickets here, they’re $30 in advance, $45 at the door.

MAPP
Mapp will be sprawling over 21 venues as well as public spaces, street corners, BART stations, cafes, bars, taquerias, and homes all around the Mission. The event takes common spaces and for one chaotic evening transforms them into whatever the artists want including free live music, spoken word, performance art, film screenings, unorthodox conversations and happenings. Check out the website for more info on venues and schedule of events.

World Vegetarian Festival
I’ve mentioned this event before so I’ll summarize in haiku form:
no gaga meat-dress
but much scrumptious cuisine
and cute vegan chicks

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
This is an event for Bluegrass lovers, and their friends who aren’t into bluegrass at all. Some highlights include Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, and Emmylou Harris (plus MC Hammer is playing on Friday). Did I mention it’s free?? Check out the full line-up here, and Katie’s picks here.
