Scales & Gavel 1.jpgSan Francisco prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old man for allegedly hitting and killing a 70-year-old woman with his car at a Haight-Ashbury intersection Wednesday and then fleeing the scene.

Joyce Lau, of San Francisco, was hit by a black Toyota Prius at Waller and Cole streets at about 8 a.m., according to police. She died at the hospital at 1:50 p.m.

Police said the driver, Iddo Avital of San Francisco, drove off after hitting Lau. He was arrested later in the day in San Francisco, and the vehicle was recovered.

Prosecutors charged Avital with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, district attorney’s office spokesman Seth Steward said today.

Avital is expected to be arraigned on the charges in San Francisco Superior Court Wednesday morning, according to Steward.

He posted bail after his arrest and is out of custody, according to the Sheriff’s department.
