San Francisco police called off a search Thursday for a shooting suspect in Visitacion Valley’s Sunnydale public housing projects, but recovered a weapon that may have been used in the incident.

At about 8:10 a.m. Thursday, officers on patrol saw a male suspect shooting a gun near the complex in the 200 block of Blythedale Avenue and tried to apprehend him, police said.

The suspect fled and officers searched the complex until 10:40 a.m., but did not find him, police spokeswoman Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.

Police did find a gun and spent bullet casings in the area and are working to confirm they were the ones used in the shooting, Tomioka said. Narcotics were also recovered in the area.

The suspect was not shooting at the officers, and no one was reported injured by the gunshots, according to Tomioka.
