booze.jpgPolice in the Bay Area have arrested 167 drivers since Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the California Highway Patrol, up slightly since 2009.

Statewide since Friday, 990 drivers have been arrested on DUI charges and eight people have died on roadways, according to the CHP.

One traffic death was reported in the Bay Area.

The statistics were recorded between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. today. Police made 923 DUI arrests statewide last year during the same period on Labor Day weekend, according to the CHP.

Area law enforcement in recent weeks has increased drunken driving patrols and DUI/driver’s license checkpoints as part of a summer crackdown campaign. The increased-enforcement period, which is funded by state and federal funds, ends at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Police and CHP officers in San Francisco have made 102 DUI arrests during the campaign.

In Santa Clara County, officers representing 15 law enforcement agencies made 343 DUI arrests between Aug. 20 and midnight Saturday, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Officers made 363 DUI arrests during the same period last year.

Law enforcement in San Mateo County has arrested 172 drivers for DUI offenses since Aug. 20, according to the Daly City police department.

At a checkpoint Friday night in Atherton officers screened 113 vehicles and made no DUI arrests. An injury accident Friday night in Pacifica is believed to have involved a driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to police.
