Drunken drivers might sober up in September over a bill that aims to revoke licenses from repeat offenders who drive under the influence.
Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, announced Monday that a bill to revoke DUI offenders’ licenses has been sent to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for approval.
The bill, AB 1601, would give judges authority to revoke a driver’s license for drivers who rack up three or more DUI convictions within a 10 year period. The licenses could be revoked for up to 10 years.
The bill would be “a major victory for public safety,” said Hill, who authored the bill.
Almost 188,000 drivers in California were convicted for driving under the influence in 2008, according to a statement from Hill’s office. Of those, more than 9,160 were third time DUI offenders within a 10-year period.
The governor plans to support the measure, and he will sign the bill before Sept. 30, his spokeswoman Andrea McCarthy said.
