A coalition of advocates for seniors and labor groups will rally outside a federal building in San Francisco this morning to call for Social Security to remain intact.
Today marks the 75th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s signing the Social Security Act into law.
But several organizations in San Francisco are warning against suggestions by some in Washington, D.C. to cut Social Security benefits or raise the retirement age in order to fix the federal government’s deficit woes.
The groups are planning a 75th “birthday party” outside the federal building at Mission and Seventh streets in downtown San Francisco, to include seniors, workers, disabled persons, students and families.
Organizers include the California Alliance for Retired Americans and the San Francisco Central Labor Council.
They also plan on releasing a new report, “Social Security Works for California,” which contends that cutting the program would be harmful to millions of seniors in the state, as well as hundreds of thousands of children living with their grandparents, who depend on Social Security as their primary source of income.
The event begins at 11 a.m.
