Scales & Gavel 1.jpgProsecutors are reviewing evidence this morning against an 18-year-old San Francisco man charged in the killing of a German tourist Sunday night in the city’s theater district.
Police arrested Phillip Stewart on suspicion of murder Monday.

Stewart was one of five people detained following a shooting outside a private party in the 400 block of Mason Street, near Union Square, that killed Mechtild Schroeer, 50, of Minden, Germany, according to police.

Schroeer had been walking in the area at about 9 p.m. when at least two people opened fire as a large crowd gathered outside the party, police said.

Two teens, a 15-year-old boy and a 19-year-old woman, both from San Francisco, were also struck by bullets and survived.

Police said the three victims were not the intended targets. An investigation is ongoing.
Schroeer and her husband Stefan had been visiting the U.S. and were staying at a nearby hotel at the time, according to police.
