11:57 AM: Five people were seriously injured this morning when an out-of-control sport utility vehicle crashed into a shaded area next to a bus shelter in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood.
The crash was reported at about 9:35 a.m. near a San Francisco Municipal Railway stop at San Bruno and Arleta avenues, where commuters had gathered to wait for buses in a shaded area between the transit stop and an apartment complex, San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
A 24-year-old woman driving a gray Ford Explorer south on San Bruno Avenue has told police a mechanical problem caused her to lose control of the vehicle and drive off the roadway near Arleta Avenue.
The SUV crashed into a fence and then struck a cluster of five people waiting in the shade.
All five victims, one man and four women ranging in age from 30 to 70, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said.
As of 11:30 a.m., one of the victims was in critical condition and the other four were in serious condition, Kagan said.
The driver was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
“She was extremely emotional and upset,” San Francisco fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.
10:34 AM: A car crashed into a bus shelter this morning in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood, police said.
Injuries have been reported, but further details were not immediately available, police said.
The crash was reported at 9:36 a.m. at San Bruno and Arleta avenues.
