sfpd_arrestcuffs.jpgThree men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood early Saturday morning, a police spokesman said today.

Rudy Mejia, 21, Anthony Rodriguez, 19, and Thair Alhafnawi, 24, were arrested in connection with the shooting, which was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Grant and Columbus avenues, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

Two men in their 20s were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Their injuries were not life threatening, Esparza said.

Police initially believed three people were shot but later determined only two were struck by the gunfire, he said.

Plainclothes police officers responding to the shooting tried to stop at least one fleeing suspect, who allegedly turned and aimed a gun at the officers, Esparza said.

The man did not fire his weapon, but at least one officer fired a shot in response. No one was struck by the shot, according to Esparza.

The man was taken into custody, and police recovered the firearm. Police also detained two other men for questioning in connection with the shooting and later arrested them, he said.

Mejia, Rodriguez and Alhafnawi were booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder, according to Esparza.
