Sen. Barbara Boxer was at the site of a major construction project in San Francisco this morning to kick off a tour highlighting her efforts to bring jobs to California.
Boxer joined San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Metropolitan Transportation Commission executive director Steve Heminger and a group of workers on Doyle Drive, the site of a project that has received more than $100 million in federal stimulus money for seismic improvements and traffic safety measures.
Doyle Drive provides direct access to the Golden Gate Bridge, and carries more than 100,000 commuters each weekday. The road has deteriorated since its construction in 1936, and is being replaced in a project that is expected to wrap up in 2013.
Boxer called the project “the biggest job construction site in the Bay Area,” and an example of how “we’re putting people back to work…and we’re doing it all over the state.”
Boxer is facing a challenge from Republican candidate Carly Fiorina for her Senate seat in the November election.
She touted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as one of the big accomplishments of her time in the Senate. The Doyle Drive project is being funded with more than $100 million from the stimulus bill.
“I’m fighting for jobs every day in the Senate, jobs that rebuild our roads and put people to work with good paychecks,” Boxer said. “These are the jobs that are getting California moving again.”
