parkingmeter_generic1.jpgA San Francisco traffic enforcement officer was hospitalized late this morning after his cart was struck by another vehicle at an intersection and he was ejected, police said.

The crash happened at about 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of Polk and Ellis streets, according to police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza.

The Department of Parking and Traffic employee was traveling north on Polk Street when another vehicle traveling west on Ellis Street apparently ran a red light and struck him, Esparza said.

The three-wheeled DPT cart rolled over, ejecting the officer onto the street, and the cart landed on his head, Esparza said.

The officer, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was rushed to San Francisco General in serious condition. He is expected to survive, Esparza said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer stopped at the scene, he said.
