City College of San Francisco is offering a free day of classes, including yoga and engineering, today after canceling most classes in its summer session due to severe state budget cuts.
The “Open College” event was organized by the General Assembly, an on-campus activist group composed of students, faculty and staff. It marks the second of three days of free classes, said Felix Cabrera, an associated student senator.
The final “Open College” event will take place on Aug. 4.
“We are trying to make students aware of the budget cuts in regards to education,” Cabrera said. “We wanted students to be able to take classes for the fun of taking classes and teachers to teach without any curriculum or guidelines.”
During the day, students will have the opportunity to assemble at speak-outs and talk about how they have been affected by the budget cuts, Cabrera said.
Participants will be able to choose from 14 classes taught by City College instructors and students, including welding, ESL, genetics, politics, engineering, Spanish, writing and yoga. There will also be a class focused on the economic crisis and another on environmentalism, Cabrera said. The classes will not be credited or graded.
Registration is not required, but participants must be at least 18 years old.
The day begins with an orientation at 10 a.m. followed by the first class at 11 a.m. A free lunch will be offered at 1 p.m. and the final class ends at 5 p.m. All classes will be held inside the science building on the Ocean Campus, at 50 Phelan Ave.
