San Francisco police and prosecutors have concluded that the fatal shooting of a teenager on Geary Boulevard in May was not a crime and that no murder charges will be filed.
Ilya Yurchenkov, 18, of San Francisco, was fatally shot at about 11:30 p.m. on May 7 in the 2400 block of Geary Boulevard, near Lyon Street.
The alleged gunman, Desmond Wroten, 18, of San Francisco, was arrested a short time later.
Prosecutors at the time declined to file a murder charge against Wroten, citing the need for further investigation.
Police homicide Lt. Mike Stasko said today that prior to the shooting, Yurchenkov and a friend were involved in an altercation with others on the street but then went inside a locked home.
Someone outside then yelled something and Yurchenkov came out armed “with a big hunting knife,” Stasko said.
Prosecutors concluded that “even though the other guy shouldn’t have had the gun, he also was able to use it protect himself,” Stasko said.
Wroten is still facing charges of carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a gun with a removed serial number, according to the district attorney’s office.
