San Francisco’s Sunday Streets program rolls back to the Mission District this Sunday with hockey demonstrations, bicycle activities and tune-ups, circus and dance performances.
“Sunday Streets has become a great way for families from all over the Bay Area to enjoy our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom in a statement. “It has also become a national model for creating a safe, fun, car-free place for people to get out and get active.”
An extended route that runs along Harrison Street from Garfield Square Park at 26th Street north to 17th Street adds an extra mile to the program for activities such as skating lessons, roller soccer demonstrations and several bike programs.
The bike programs include bicycle maintenance, training and education, demonstrations such as bus bike rack loading, and test rides on electric bikes and a bike built for seven.
Free bicycle maintenance and tune-ups will be provided by Sports Basement’s “Lube Fairies” at Garfield Square, REI at Harrison and 17th Street, and the Bike Kitchen at 24th and Shotwell Streets.
Pedestrians are welcome to pedal their way through the event with a free bicycle rental offered at various locations on Harrison Street provided by Bike and Roll, Bay Area Bicycle Rentals & Tours, and Blazing Saddles. Bike and Roll is offering free rides on a Funcycle, a round seven-seater powered by all riders and steered by one.
Bicycle education programs for youth and adults will be presented by SF Bicycle Coalition’s Freedom From Training Wheels at Garfield Square Park on Harrison, and Presidio YMCA Bike Program’s Kid’s Bike Safety Rodeo in front of Moscone Elementary School at Harrison near 22nd Streets.
The San Jose Sharks Mobile Shark Tank slides in for a shoes-only street hockey demonstration where kids can stop by and try street hockey with borrowed sticks and balls, and RollerSoccer U.S. Team kicks in a demonstration of it’s own.
Kid’s activities at Garfield Square include yoga, games, hula hoops and a lacrosse demonstration by Lacrosse for Life.
A noontime high wire trapeze performance by Circus Bella will tumble through the parking lot of O’Connell High School at Harrison and 20th Streets.
Organizers are still confirming details for World Cup finals screenings at various locations along the route.
